I'm Too Pretty For My Android Phone

Posted by Karey Westfall in "Android Talk" @ 07:30 AM

"Frank Meehan has a message for makers of Android handsets and tablets: Stop focusing on elite early adopter customers and start thinking about what the cool kids want. 'If you go to a nightclub in any city in the world, the pretty girl has an iPhone or a BlackBerry,' Meehan told Mashable at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. 'She doesn't have an Android phone. She has no emotional attachment to an Android phone. It's too complicated. It's a geek device, it's all wrong.'"

Hmmm...apparently just because I'm a girl, I should not be geek enough to own an Android phone according to Frank Meehan, CEO of INQ. Well, Frank, I think you have it wrong. I have never owned an iPhone or Blackberry (not that there is anything wrong with them) and I'm fairly geeky. I play Dominion (thanks P-town friends!), lust over new technology (When is the Xperia Play coming out?), can sorta fix a computer as well as do some basic code writing (HTML, hahahah), just started watching all the Star Trek Next Generation episodes on DVD (thanks hun, you are going to pay for it later), and I can read binary clocks. Oh ya, and don't forget, I help write up news posts on everyone's favorite Android site, Android Thoughts. Ya, all that might not be enough to consider me an uber-geek but I think it qualifies enough to be able to understand how to use an Android device. And I know lots of other females out there who are just as devoted to our little green friend (shout out to the girls (and guys) in the Android group).

So Frank I leave you with this; a quote from one of my favorite (and geeky) shows, Stargate SG-1. Captain Samantha Carter said, "And just because my reproductive organs are on the inside instead of the outside doesn't mean I can't handle whatever you can handle."

Little is know about the upcoming Xperia Pro from Sony Ericsson. So check out these photos and video for a little sneak peek on the new gaming phone!

Coming Soon: The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, A Gaming Phone

Posted by Karey Westfall in "Android News" @ 08:00 AM

"Rumors of a PlayStation phone have swirling for months, and more recently we learned it will be called the Xperia Play and saw a fairly thorough hands-on with the device."

As some of you may know from the (slightly creepy) Android commercial aired during the Super Bowl, Sony Ericsson will be releasing a gaming phone called the Xperia Play. Not many details about the phone are confirmed as of now, but we expect to hear more when Sony Ericsson officially announces the phone this Sunday. If this phone delivers with awesome gaming capabilites and connectivity, it may change both the mobile phone and hand held gaming fields. If anything, it should be popular with the young gaming crowd (and us older gamers too!)

Almost Half Of Smart Phones Bought Are Android

Posted by Karey Westfall in "Android News" @ 02:00 PM

"If you or someone you know recently purchased a smart phone, the chances are pretty good that it is running. In fact, nearly half of all recent (US) smart phone acquisitions were Android."

Chances are that if you know someone who recently purchased a smart phone, that phone will be running Android. Recent reports say that 43% of phones bought are Android. And that's good news for Android, which will not be going anywhere in the near future!

New T-Mobile Device Release Dates Leaked

Posted by Craig Horlacher in "Android News" @ 06:00 AM

There you have it folks! A leaked T-Mobile memo gave this info. The Dell Streak 7 on 2/2, the Mororola ClIQ2 on 1/19, the Samsung Galaxy S 4G on 2/23, and the LG G-Slate on 3/23. It's a tough call but I think I think the most interesting device to me on this list is the LG G-Slate. Coming with Honeycomb is a good first step but I'm looking forward to see if LG has any other tricks up their sleeve. Also of note, the Dell Streak 7 will be priced at $300 after rebate.

Get the G2 from T-Mobile for Free

Posted by Craig Horlacher in "Android Mobile Operators" @ 07:00 AM

"Oh, how we love a good deal and this one comes courtesy of with the T-Mobile G2 going for the low low price of…free! Of course, this requires a new 2-year commitment."

The G2 is a device that never seemed to get much attention, possibly because of it's 800MHz CPU. Don't let the lower number fool you though. This is a second generation Snapdragon that is just as fast as a lot of 1GHz CPU's out there. In fact, it's probably faster for graphics and maybe some other things. Basically, if you want a good Android phone with a physical keyboard this is a great deal!

CES 2011: Dell's Press Conference Announcing the Dell Streak 7, Venue Phone, and Other New Hardware

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 04:00 PM

For full-screen viewing, click click on the video above and watch it on YouTube.

This is a video shot in Las Vegas at CES 2011, the Consumer Electronics Show. This is the first time the Dell Streak 7 has been officially unveiled, along with the Dell Venue, and the un-named 10 inch tablet. Other announced hardware includes a 3D version of the XPS 17 laptop, a new Alienware Aurora desktop PC, a new XPS 8300 desktop PC, and a few other odds and ends. The press conference was almost an hour long, so I tried to include only the interesting parts. Enjoy!

Affordable Android Phone And Tablet Due This Summer Via Vizio Via

Posted by Jason Lee in "Android News" @ 09:00 AM

"Vizio Inc., which put inexpensive flat-panel TVs in living rooms, now is setting its sights on cellphones and tablet computers."

You remember Vizio? You know, those guys who make the really cheap yet not totally worthless HDTVs? Well, looks like we may soon get a really cheap and hopefully not totally worthless Android phone and tablet. The 4-inch Via phone and 8-inch Via tablet are set to come our way this summer running an yet to be announced version of Android. I must say that I am some what excited about this news. I really would like a cheap Android tablet to play with but don't want a complete piece of junk like the current "bargain" tablets on the market. If Vizio can do with Android what they have done with HDTVs we could be in for a real treat. It won't be the best device on the market for sure but perhaps it will be worth using. Even the phone has me a little excited with the chance that it will not be sold or branded by a carrier. I'm all about unlocked and uncrapwared phones. Bring it on Vizio! Let's see what you've got.

"UPDATE: Front facing camera is VGA. Will come in 8GB, 16GB and 32GB storage capacities. Samsung has announced a new Android-based Galaxy Player that will be showcased next week at the CES 2011."

We had previously heard rumors that Samsung may unveil the new Galaxy Player very early in January, but it is now confirmed that they will spotlight it at CES next week. The Galaxy Player includes Android 2.2, front facing camera, 3.2 MP rear facing camera, 4 inch screen and other goodies. The front facing camera may turn out to be the feature you never knew you needed, so it will be interesting to see how well it is received after the Player is available for purchase.

Ring, Ring: Samsung Tab Has Phone Capabilities On T-Mobile After Flashing

Posted by Karey Westfall in "Android Slates/Tablets & Accessories" @ 11:00 AM

"...We now have the US TMobile Galaxy Tab making/receiving phone calls."

The T-mobile Samsung Tab in the US can make and receive phone calls if you flash it. The ability to make phone calls would make this one handy device! Would you consider flashing your Tab to have the ability to use the phone?
