Netflix Now Available on Select Devices; More to Come

Posted by Kevin Jackson in "Android Software" @ 02:00 PM

"Now Android users can browse movies, manage their instant queue, and watch movies right from their phone. You can even pick up watching movies from where you left off on your TV or computer."

Awesome news from Netflix today! Even though the number of devices is currently pretty limited (mostly HTC devices, with the Nexus S thrown in for good measure; all running 2.2 and up), Netflix says that they are working to bring access to as many devices as they can "in the coming months."

Are you excited about this development? Or are you waiting for it to start working on the tablets before getting too excited? Let us know in the forum.

Hulu For Android Coming Soon -- To "Select" Devices

Posted by Kevin Jackson in "Android Software" @ 02:00 PM

http://downloadsquad.switched.com/2...ly-coming-soon/

"Android users who have been waiting for Hulu to release an app for their devices now have an official light at the end of the tunnel."

Do you want to watch the latest episodes of The Office, House, or Saturday Night Live on your phone? Your chance may soon be here -- if you have one of the "select" 2.2 phones that Hulu will be releasing the app for. Honestly I wish I could be more excited about this news, but if the Netflix announcement we saw recently is any indication, this will only be available for devices with hardware DRM, which likely leaves out a large portion of current devices.

How about you? Are you excited about this announcement? Do the DRM-blues have you down? Do you think the current stable of devices will be largely Hulu and Netflix free? Would you upgrade just to be able to watch videos on the go? Let us know in the forum (just click the "Discuss" link).

PlayOn App Brings Hulu and Netflix To Android

Posted by Karey Westfall in "Android Software" @ 06:30 AM

https://market.android.com/details?...layon.playonapp

"Hulu, Netflix Instant Queue*, Comedy Central, MLB.tv*, CNN, CBS, ESPN, ESPN3, TV.com, SpikeTV, The Ultimate Fighter, Amazon VOD, TBS, BET, Adult Swim, Oprah Winfrey Network, Nick, PBS, PBS Kids, MTV, Vevo, and many more. Now you can watch the online content from all of these channels on your Android Phone."

The PlayOn application lets Android 2.2 and up users watch your favorite channels via your mobile device. It includes Netlix, Hulu, Adult Swim, TV.com and other popular channels. The app allows for connection by 3G or Wi-Fi as long as you have the PlayOn Media Server running on your PC. The app is free to download, but there is a subscription fee for the Media Server plus certain channels require an additional subscription fee. If unsure whether you want to pay for the server or not, there is a 14 day free trial to help you make up your mind. But for some Android users unable to support channels on their own, it may be well worth the fee!

Some Android Devices to Get Netflix Next Year

Posted by Jon Westfall in "Android Software" @ 10:00 AM

http://blog.netflix.com/2010/11/net...on-android.html

"We regard Android as an exciting technology that drives a range of great devices that our members could use to instantly watch TV shows and movies from Netflix. We are eager to launch on these devices and are disappointed that we haven't been able to do so already. The hurdle has been the lack of a generic and complete platform security and content protection mechanism available for Android.... This clearly is not the preferred solution, and we regret the confusion it might create for consumers. However, we believe that providing the service for some Android device owners is better than denying it to everyone."

Don't you just love how DRM messes up the world? Hate it or Hate it, DRM is the reason why Netflix hasn't gotten to your Android device just yet. But for certain devices, early next year may see us have the ability to stream Netflix. And that would be, in the words of Peter Griffin, Freakin Sweet.
