Google Maps 5.8 Released with Improved "Places" Features

Posted by Craig Horlacher in "Android Software" @ 10:00 AM

"When deciding on a place to go, people often want to know what a place looks like in addition to seeing ratings and reviews. You can now contribute photos to help others get a sense of places. You can now attach your photos to Places, and yours may even become the profile picture for that page."

Google has added a number of social features to Maps. As mentioned above it will now let you add your own photo of a place. New descriptive terms will also show up when you search for a place. You can add places if the one you're looking for doesn't exist. So now you can check in anywhere - even when the place isn't listed. Make sure you check the source for all the details but there is a lot here - especially for people who love to explore and try new destinations! Google Maps 5.8 for Android is compatible with Android 2.1 and newer. Have you been playing with any of the new features? Let us know what you think!

Google Latitudes: The More You Check In, The More You Save

Posted by Kevin Jackson in "Android Software" @ 05:00 AM

"The more you check in, the better those discounts get. And, since you don't have to broadcast those checkins to anyone (since Latitude has some pretty great privacy settings), you don't feel like you're selling out to all your friends to get 20% off at RadioShack."

Google is working to get their fingers into everything (not that this should surprise us at this point). Foursquare is clearly in their sites with this one. It's a great way to reward those who frequently check-in, and I like the fact that I don't have to let everyone know that I'm checking into Arby's for the third time today so that I can get that free curly fry!

Will you use this feature? Let us know at the discuss link.

New Google Maps 5.3: Now With Location History And Check-ins For Homebodies

Posted by Jason Lee in "Android Software" @ 03:00 PM

http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/20...hboard-and.html

"Today, we're happy to announce Google Maps 5.3 for Android, which lets you see your Google Location History dashboard, check in at "home," and add your own aspects for places when rating them."

Google just keeps the cool features coming. The latest update to Google Maps for Android adds the ability to view your location history much like on the "Dashboard" view you get on your desktop. Another super welcome feature is the ability to check-in at home. Something I've personally missed. I can do it on Facebook... but I don't like Facebook. :) They've also added the ability for you to add custom fields to your reviews when rating places on.. well.. Places. Not sure I'll use this last option much but it's nice to have if say some place has really awesome salsa and I want to let everyone know. If you haven't already fire up the Market and get your update!

Google Does Check-ins with Latitude and Maps

Posted by Craig Horlacher in "Android Software" @ 08:00 AM

http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/20...le+Mobile+Blog)

"You can still use Latitude to automatically update and share your location, but check-ins let you add context to the location—like captions to a photo. For example, I live in San Francisco but often travel around the world. Until today, sharing my location let friends and family know if I was across the globe or in their neighborhood. Now, check-ins let them see the cool restaurant I’m trying in Taipei or join me for a latte at the cafe nearby."

It looks like Foursquare has some competition. Now you can check in to places with Latitude. It even supports automatic check-ins if you want to enable that feature and it will check-out automatically as well. You'll need to update to Maps 5.1.0 first. I'm trying to update Google Maps now and the download stops before it really starts. Are you a Foursquare user? If so how does this compare? If you use Latitude will you use the new check-in features?
