Executive Editor - Android Thoughts

Jonathan E. Westfall is a researcher and technologist working in New York City at Columbia Business School, who also writes for the Thoughts Media Network. His current research focuses on the variables individuals use when making economic and public policy decisions, specifically strength of handedness, a variable correlated with a number of decision-making and cognitive psychology tasks and measures. He also conducts research on consumer decision making, and applications to both marketing and public policy. In addition to his research, he also maintains an active career in information technology, where he has worked as a consultant since 1997, founding his own firm, Bug Jr. Systems. As a consultant he has developed custom software solutions (including native Windows 32 applications, Windows .NET applications, ASP, ASP.NET, and PHP web applications), and served as a senior network and systems architect and administrator (on both Windows and Unix networks, and hybrids). He has also been recognized as a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) since 2008.

Karey Westfall

Contributing Editor

Karey is a stay-at-home mom to two wonderful fur/feather kids; a 13 year old "kitty" named Oreo and a young skittish parakeet named Mati. She spends most of her time on her computer, reading, cleaning, traveling, stalking Hello Kitty, listening to Radio Margaritaville, watching the Indians, playing Dominion, sleeping and being pestered by her kids. But her favorite hobby is crafting; crochet, knitting, sewing, beading, recycling objects, card making and needlework.

Karey graduated with an Associates of Science and consults for Bug Jr. Systems. She is new to the Android tech world, but fell in love after realizing she can get email on her phone. She currently resides in New York with her kids, supply of crafting goodies and her loving husband, Jon.

I've always loved mobile devices.  When I was around 5 (I was born in 1977) I drew a screen and some buttons on a small block of wood (candy bar form factor) and pretended it was some kind of crazy mobile communications device or PDA.  My first PDA was an HP OmniGo 120.  From there I went to Windows Mobile devices starting with a Philips Nino 325.  My last one was an iMate Ultimate 6150 running Windows Mobile 6.1.  Now I have a Droid X and have been stunned at how great a phone and PDA it is.  I think Google has really done a lot right with Android and I'm excited about where it's going!

I've always done some type of PC support and/or server administration.  Some of the operating systems I've had responsibility for are , OpenVMS, SCO, Digital Unix, Linux, Solaris, and Windows Server.  Currently I work in IT at a small financial company doing server administration for specific departments as well as working with some other projects like virtualization and backups.

I will have been married to my amazing wife Cathy for 3 years in August.  We have a very fun daughter Alannah who will be 2 in August.  We are expecting another daughter at the beginning of July!  We're very involved at church and excited about what God has done for us!  We enjoy playing board games, mostly Euro games. We love to do things outside like take walks and go hiking.  The picture above is from a camping trip to Maine.

I'm glad to be part of the Android Thoughts community.  Thank you for visiting our site!

Doug Raeburn

Review Team Coordinator

Doug Raeburn lives in Lannon, WI, which is just outside of Milwaukee, WI.  He works for a large developer of software products for all sizes and types of financial institutions.  His specialty is Data Architecture, which means he designs the data structures that store the data necessary to support these products.  His primary focus is Data Warehousing, which involves the creation of an additional repository of the data from our core software products which is designed for reporting and analysis.

Outside of work, Doug maintains his fascination with technology.  He describes himself as a major league geek, involved in all manner of technology including computers, video games, smartphones, home theater, GPS units, cameras, etc.  When he's not keeping himself entertained with all of his gadgets, he enjoys reading, hiking, biking, cooking and photography.  In addition, he's a major SciFi fan, being especially partial at this time to the "reimagined" Battlestar Galactica and its prequel, Caprica.

Doug has been a reviewer and the review team coordinator for the Thoughts sites since 2003.  Prior to that he was the review editor and a reviewer for pocketnow.com.  He's semi-retired from review writing, but he'll probably come out of retirement occasionally if a really interesting product crops up.

Ashley Dunn

Copy Editor

Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Ashley is a stay-at-home mom to Logan, her son with husband Jason. She spends her days playing with a variety of interesting toys, sounding out words like “Quetzalcoatlus” (a type of flying dinosaur), reading books about animals and trucks and helping her son learn how to walk! After completing her Bachelor of Applied Communications in 2004, Ashley worked as a communications expert in fields ranging from not-for-profit charities to engineering companies to a church. She enjoys writing and has a keen eye for grammatical perfection, having mastered the art of “it’s and its” and “their, there and they’re”! When she’s not playing with her son (during nap times only!), Ashley enjoys reading, watching movies, walking (although she should do it more!), and writing in the journal she’s creating for Logan.

Chris Baxter

Thoughts Media Review Team

Chris Baxter is an IT Professional and part time Web Designer who currently resides in North Aurora, Illinois. Chris's love for technology started when he was introduced to an Apple II computer in the First Grade.  By the age of 13 he was professionally troubleshooting computers on a part time basis and he has been in the computer field one way or another ever since.  A turning point in his life was when he saw a laptop for the first time.  It was love at first sight and probably explains his obsession for all things having to do with mobile computing, which seems to only grow stronger each year.

When he is not trying to figure out how to raise money for the latest gadget or is just in between gadgets, playing video games, watching movies, or reading a good book are what occupy his time.

Jon Childs

Contributing Editor

Jon was born and raised just outside of Boston, MA. After receiving a BS in Computer Systems Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute he returned to the Boston area to work in the software industry.

Jon is married with two sons and an overactive black lab puppy.  When not trying to introduce his sons to his love of gadgets, he spends most of his free time carting kids from one sporting event to another.  In his non-kid related free time Jon likes to play basketball and softball, but is now realizing it might to time to start taking up golf.  When stuck indoors Jon like to enjoy his basement home theater which can always use a little tweaking.

Jon has been a interested in computers since they brought the brand new Commodore PET into his third grade class.  In general he is interested in anything that blinks, beeps, or can be programmed.

Monty Gibson

Thoughts Media Review Team

I've been a geek since birth. Having my first computer at 12; a Tandy 100, from Radio Shack I've since then moved on to building my own computers using water and mineral oil. I've ran a BBS before the Internet came to be and was a SysOp (System Operator) of a 22 node BBS which all streamed from my bedroom which was served off of a huge 500 megabyte hard drive and a lightning fast 14.4k modem. Times have changed...rapidly. I've been with Pocket PC's...er...Windows Devices since my HP Jornada 520 which used a sled-like device to connect to the Internet. It's been an exciting journey. I have my own website that I devote to my family; my wife Kim, my daughter Kayla and my son Kyle, come by and say "hi," at The Gibson's Home Dot Org.

I've beta tested a lot of software that you're probably running on your Windows Mobile device right now...but I'm not even in the computer field. I'm a nurse at one of the most notorious Cancer Hospitals in Tampa, Florida. I've been a nurse for 15 years and enjoy it now more than ever.

I hope to continue to write reviews and bring a little knowledge to the table with my articles and share some of my passion with you. Our readers. Take care!

Chris is a systems developer living in central Pennsylvania with his family (1 wife, 2 kids, 1 cat) and working at THE Pennsylvania State University.

At work he enjoys programming more than anything else and writes most things in VB.Net but has a pile of Transact SQL code in production too. He "manages" a group of 7 very talented and technical guys.  His first computer program was written over 40 years ago and was punched on paper tape.

Hobbies at home include gardening/landscaping, planning/building/changing the home media center, putting software on his phone, and, of course, writing reviews for Thoughts Media.

His intermittent, incomplete, irreverent blog is here. He doesn't care for Facebook.

Jeff Song

Thoughts Media Review Team

Jeff currently lives in the beautiful city of Chicago in an apartment near the lake shore. He is a CPA and internal auditor for a financial institution located in downtown Chicago where he looks at Compliance and Consumer Protection issues. His love for technology far outshadows his fascination for numbers and fraud, and began when he got the Handspring Visor while he was in high school. Jeff loves to get his hands on as many new tech products as he can. He is currently using an Android device, the HTC EVO 4G but has used most of the major smartphone OSes out there today and those from yesterday.

When he's not playing with some new gadget or auditing the books, you can find Jeff with his friends or out trying new types of foods and cuisines.

Don Tolson

Thoughts Media Review Team

Don is a Senior Solution Architect for Fujitsu Consulting, a worldwide systems integration and development firm.  He is heavily involved in their Enterprise Mobility and Security practices, but on the side, REALLY enjoys playing with the latest hardware and software.  Don's been writing reviews for Thoughts Media for a number of years now, focusing mainly on phones, digital home, and other gadgets that just make life more fun...(his first PDA was a Sharp Wizard!)  He lives on the west coast of Canada, where he, his wife, two-teenaged sons, and dog spend a lot of time outdoors enjoying a climate basked by the warm winds of the Pacific. In other words, we DON'T spend 6 months of the year in snow! He also is an avid bike-commuter -- covering over 20km a day back and forth to work.
